Lately you’ve doubtless got many emails that say something like “Using our AI Powered system, watch as fill in the blank”.
The underlying message is that whatever system they are selling is bound to knock it out of the park, because its AI based. AI powered would appear to be a holy grail type phrase that guarantees success for any and all adopters. AI Driven works pretty well also, you get the idea.
We recently engaged with one of these new rapidly emerging companies, not by choice, but by the choice of a long term client of ours’. We did garner some insights into the inner workings of at least one of these newly emerging providers as a result.
It started rather bizarrely with an announcement via email that we were attending an online meeting the following week, by a company we’d never heard of. We weren’t asked, we were informed, our prior client mentioned was on the thread. Needless to say this was irksome and rude, and instantly became a meeting we were not attending. Several subsequent attempts were made to reschedule the meeting rapidly (one email for example that asked “can you guys make it for a meeting this morning?”).
The whole thing reeked of desperation, so we asked our clients to put an end to the supplications.
By this point we had been made aware of the thrust of the initiative, which was AI generation of content for SEO purposes. This is all well and good, but would be putting the cart before the horse from an SEO perspective. Our clients’ website hadn’t been built with search in mind, as it wasn’t even a minor priority for them at that time. Nor indeed had they ever performed any offsite SEO, their domain authority was pretty low.
No doubt our clients received an email as described above they decided to act on, telling me they’d decided it was a good time to undertake entering the world of Search Engine ranking. Given our lengthy and positive relationship, there were no issues explaining a directional rethink was sorely needed, and we are currently working on building a new website geared for search for them, along with performing offsite optimization.
Thinking about these events we came to the following conclusions, which certainly apply to this particular provider, and can probably be extended to many more.
- -The company is recently formed, has gotten investment but very little in the way of revenue thus far.
- -Its staff are young and recently hired.
- -In a quickly deteriorating business environment, these staff members are under plenty of pressure to bring in sales.
We came to these conclusions from the behavior as described herein- its quite abnormal in the business world and raises flags. There’s not necessarily anything inherently wrong with these AI based marketing products, but they are likely to get rammed down one’s throat, at least from our experience.
Being forewarned of such will make it easier to deal with.
