We Ranked #1 on Google for Competitive Keywords — Here’s How- by Ally Lennon (with no AI used to generate this article).

We got to #1 on google for a gaggle of keywords- so can you- here’s how.

See the graphic attached- these are real results from Moz, a very reliable SEO tool. Dominating the local Denver based search search suite for all things web design and development was never going to be easy, nor indeed an overnight task. Here’s a blueprint for how we did it, with some tips you can apply to further your own efforts in this direction.

– Our website domain name has been indexed or known by Google for over 20 years. This of course helps- aged domains are trusted ones. If you have a newer domain you are using that’s all well and good- do make sure its indexed via Google search console. Also ensure its registered for multiple years going forward- this also is a ranking factor.

– How your site is constructed from a development standpoint is crucial. Big Orange Planet scores extremely highly in all 4 sections of the google page speed test, both on mobile and on desktop. These areas- speed, accessibility, SEO, and best practices do carry a lot of weight and are readily improved with some effort.

Run your domain here- and then follow the instructions Google gives you. Substantial improvements can be made with juicious use of plugins (we recommend WP Rocket and Perfmatters for site speed). Some tasks can be accomplished manually by hand-coding and using tools such as image compression software. Your goal is to get all these markers above 90/100 or as close to that as possible.

– Choose your web hosting environment wisely. While there are many very inexpensive options out there, they may not be an optimal choice. The keys are speed and uptime. Solid tech support, preferably 24/7 is also highly recommended. We ourselves use a virtual private server on regular commercial hosting from inmotionhosting.com. Do your research and check review quantity and quality thoroughly, along with server specs.

– Content. We are familiar with the old stereotypical phrase ‘content is king’. It is of course essentially true. Well thought out original content that answers users’ questions and promotes engagement is foundational. What’s your site about and why does it matter? Ensure your keywords are naturally included in the page content along with the meta title and description. Don’t try and stuff keywords in though, and remember to also focus on long tail search terms. You are telling the search robots a story, and they are evolved enough to gauge your services/products/mission from a well written description. Use professional or AI help as you see fit. Make sure the content is strongly linked internally, not just within the navigation- but on every page and post using anchor text that paints a broad picture for users and crawlers.

– Links. Internal links we just talked about. Google was built essentially as a gigantic voting system- with links counting as votes. While the algorithms have improved drastically over the years the same principle still holds. Quality inbound links are still vital, and plenty of them. (in spite of what google might tell you to the contrary). We’ve been building links to our website for many years and they are the cornerstone of our successful positionings. As to how to build these links?- all the information is out there on the web, along with a lot of dis-information. Our advice is to consult with a professional on this and other aspects of SEO. While there are more elements to this story, this is the summary of the main factors that have led us to where we are now.
