Why Having Better Design Software Doesn’t Necessarily Make You a Better Designer
Creative software has become almost absurdly capable. Open Photoshop and you can manipulate photographs at a level that would have seemed like science fiction a few decades ago. Open Illustrator and you can construct precise vector artwork that can be reproduced at practically any size. Figma can turn interface design into a highly collaborative digital workspace, while tools such as Canva have made sophisticated-looking layouts accessible to people who have never considered themselves designers at all. Add video editing, motion graphics, illustration, 3D and AI-assisted creative tools to the mix and there are now more ways to make something than most people could possibly learn in a lifetime.
That’s a good thing. I like the tools. I use creative software because it makes things possible that would otherwise take dramatically more time, money or specialized equipment. The problem starts when we confuse having more capability with having more creative ability. Software can give you control over an image, a logo, a layout, an animation or an interface. It doesn’t automatically tell you whether the thing you’re making is any good.
That distinction gets lost surprisingly often. Someone learns Photoshop and thinks they’re learning design. Someone learns Figma and thinks they’re learning UX. Someone discovers a library of templates and thinks the difficult part of branding has been solved. Someone starts using an AI image generator and assumes the machine has somehow supplied the creative direction. In each case, the software may be doing exactly what it was designed to do. The missing ingredient is judgment.
Creative Software Gives You Possibilities
The easiest way to understand the difference is to think about what creative software actually provides. Photoshop gives you an enormous set of ways to manipulate pixels. Illustrator gives you ways to construct and manipulate vector objects. InDesign gives you control over page composition and typography. Figma gives teams an environment for creating, testing and communicating interface designs. Premiere gives you control over video and sound. After Effects gives you an extraordinary range of possibilities for motion and compositing. None of those tools, however, begins with the question that matters most: What should this actually be?
That’s the part that happens before the software becomes particularly interesting. A designer has to understand the purpose of the thing being created, who is supposed to see it, what they need to understand, what they should feel, what action they should take and what information matters most. A logo needs to work as a tiny mark as well as a large graphic. A website needs to communicate before someone starts admiring its animation. A photograph may need editing without looking edited. An advertisement can be technically spectacular and still fail because nobody understands what it’s advertising.
The software is usually very happy to help you make something. It doesn’t necessarily care whether you should make it.
Photoshop Can Fix Almost Anything Except a Bad Idea
Photoshop is probably one of the clearest examples because its capabilities have become so familiar that people sometimes forget how extraordinary they actually are. You can remove objects, change lighting, composite photographs, rebuild backgrounds, alter colors, retouch details, create entirely artificial environments and make extremely precise changes to individual parts of an image. The software has become so capable that the technical barrier to image manipulation is dramatically lower than it once was.
But the ability to change an image doesn’t tell you what should change. A photograph can be technically flawless and emotionally empty. A composite can be perfectly constructed and completely unnecessary. An image can contain beautiful lighting, perfect masking and sophisticated effects while communicating absolutely nothing useful. In fact, the more powerful the software becomes, the easier it can be to hide a weak idea underneath impressive execution.
That’s an important distinction in professional creative work. Knowing how to perform a technique is useful. Knowing when the technique improves the communication is much more valuable. Sometimes the right decision is to remove an effect, simplify an image, leave a photograph alone or start over entirely. Photoshop can execute all of those decisions. It doesn’t make them for you.
More Features Don’t Automatically Produce Better Design
This is true across practically every creative application. New versions of software routinely add more tools, more automation, more effects, more templates and more ways to accelerate repetitive work. That’s generally good news for people who understand how to use the capabilities. But there is a funny side effect: the number of available options can become a distraction from the thing you’re actually trying to communicate.
Designers have always had this problem. Give someone a new typeface collection and suddenly everything needs a new typeface. Give someone animation and suddenly everything moves. Give someone a library of visual effects and suddenly everything glows, fades, bounces or explodes. Give someone access to unlimited image generation and suddenly the problem becomes choosing between 400 nearly identical images instead of figuring out what the image is supposed to accomplish.
The technology changes. The underlying problem doesn’t.
Good design has always involved restraint. The designer has to decide what deserves attention and what doesn’t. They have to establish hierarchy. They have to understand proportion, contrast, typography, spacing, color, composition and context. They have to recognize when something is helping and when it is simply there because the software made it easy to add.
That is why a simpler design created by someone with strong judgment can outperform a much more technically sophisticated piece of work. The sophisticated work may contain more. The better design communicates more clearly.
The Software Doesn’t Know What Your Audience Needs
This becomes particularly obvious when creative software moves into areas where communication matters more than decoration. A website is a good example. You can build an incredibly polished interface with beautiful transitions, custom illustrations and carefully constructed visual components. You can spend weeks making everything feel modern and sophisticated. Then a visitor arrives and has no idea what the company does, where to go or why they should care.
That’s not a software problem. It’s a design problem.
The distinction is important because the same thing can happen at every level of a project. A logo can look impressive but fail at small sizes. A brochure can be beautiful but bury the information people actually need. A product interface can be visually consistent but frustrating to use. A video can have gorgeous production values but no coherent story. A social graphic can stop the scroll but communicate the wrong message.
Software is incredibly good at helping you execute the solution once you’ve figured out what the solution should be. It is much less useful when the underlying problem hasn’t been defined. That’s one reason the relationship between visual decisions and the actual performance of a website matters so much; design can affect what a website actually accomplishes, not simply how attractive it looks.
Learning the Tool Is Still Worth Doing
None of this means technical skill doesn’t matter. It matters enormously. A designer who understands Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, InDesign or another professional tool can work faster, explore more possibilities and execute ideas that would be difficult or impossible for someone without that knowledge. Technical fluency also changes the quality of the ideas you can pursue because you understand what is actually possible.
The mistake is treating technical fluency as the destination. It is a means of getting somewhere.
The best creative professionals I’ve worked with tend to have a different relationship with their software. They know the tools extremely well, but they don’t spend their time showing off everything the tools can do. They use whatever is necessary to get the result. Sometimes that’s a complicated Photoshop composite. Sometimes it’s a simple shape and a line of text. Sometimes it’s a photograph that needed almost no editing. Sometimes the best solution is something that took ten minutes precisely because the person making it understood what didn’t need to be done.
That kind of restraint is difficult to demonstrate in a software tutorial because it isn’t really a feature. You can’t install it from a marketplace. You can’t turn it on in preferences. It comes from experience, observation and understanding what the work is supposed to accomplish.
The Tool Should Disappear Into the Work
That’s probably the best test of creative software: when the final result is good, you shouldn’t necessarily be thinking about the software that produced it. You should be thinking about the idea, the message, the image, the experience or the story. The software should disappear into the work.
That’s particularly important now that creative tools are becoming easier to use. As more people gain access to sophisticated capabilities, technical execution becomes less of a differentiator by itself. The ability to manipulate an image, construct a layout or generate an interface is increasingly available to almost everyone. What becomes more valuable is the ability to recognize what should be made in the first place and why.
That doesn’t make creative software less important. It makes the person using it more important.
And that is where things get interesting, because giving someone more creative capability doesn’t just make good work easier. It can also make bad work considerably easier to produce.

Why Professional Creative Software Can Make Bad Work Easier
There is an uncomfortable side to having extraordinarily powerful creative software: it doesn’t just make good work easier to produce. It makes bad work easier to produce too. The same capabilities that allow an experienced designer to solve a difficult visual problem can give an inexperienced designer enough tools to cover up the fact that the underlying idea isn’t working. Add templates, presets, filters, plugins, stock libraries, AI assistance and endless collections of visual assets, and the distance between having an idea and producing something that looks finished has become remarkably short.
Looking finished and being finished are two different things. That’s probably more important now than it has ever been because modern software is exceptionally good at creating the appearance of professionalism. A design can have perfect alignment, sophisticated gradients, polished typography, realistic shadows and an impressive collection of effects and still fail at the most basic job of communication. It can look like someone spent a week on it when the real problem is that nobody stopped to ask what it was supposed to accomplish.
The Software Can Make the Wrong Decision Look Very Convincing
This is where experience becomes difficult to replace with technical skill. Someone who knows Photoshop extremely well can make almost any image look intentional. They can add depth, atmosphere, texture, lighting and visual complexity. They can make an ordinary photograph dramatic or turn several unrelated photographs into something that appears to have been captured in the same place. The ability is real and valuable. But if the original concept is weak, better execution can actually make the problem harder to notice.
The same thing happens in layout and interface design. Figma makes it incredibly easy to construct polished interfaces, duplicate components, establish systems and produce variations. That’s fantastic for experienced product and interface designers because it removes enormous amounts of repetitive work. But it also means someone can construct a very convincing interface without having much understanding of information hierarchy, user behavior or the reasons people struggle with digital products. The screen can look finished long before the experience is actually designed.
I’ve always thought one of the most underrated creative skills is knowing when to stop. Software encourages the opposite. There is always another adjustment available, another effect to try, another variation to generate, another font to test and another way to make the thing feel more finished. At some point, the designer has to decide that enough is enough and judge the work on whether it communicates rather than whether there is anything else left to change.
More Choice Creates a Different Kind of Problem
For a long time, the limitation of creative work was access. You needed the right camera, printing equipment, software, studio, typefaces, photographs or technical knowledge. Those barriers have fallen dramatically. That’s one of the genuinely great things about modern creative technology. A person with a reasonably capable computer can now experiment with photography, illustration, typography, animation, video, 3D and interface design in ways that once required an entire production environment.
But removing limitations doesn’t remove the need for decisions. It creates more of them. Give a designer ten choices and they have a manageable problem. Give them ten thousand and the problem changes. The challenge becomes knowing which choices matter. This is one reason templates can be simultaneously useful and dangerous. A template can solve a structural problem, provide inspiration or save hours of repetitive production. It can also encourage people to start with a visual answer before they’ve defined the communication problem.
That’s how you end up with websites, presentations, advertisements and social graphics that look professionally assembled but strangely interchangeable. The pieces are technically competent. The composition works. The colors are pleasant. The typography is acceptable. Nothing is obviously broken. And yet there is very little identity in the result because the design decisions were inherited rather than made.
AI Has Made This Even More Obvious
Artificial intelligence has pushed this issue into a completely different territory because the software can now participate in the creation itself. Instead of simply giving a designer more ways to manipulate an image or arrange a page, AI-assisted tools can generate images, extend photographs, remove objects, create variations, suggest layouts, write copy, produce visual concepts and perform tasks that previously required a person to execute them manually.
That’s a significant change, but I don’t think the important question is whether AI can make something. Obviously it can. The more interesting question is whether the person using it knows what should be made and can recognize when the result is actually good. AI makes the distinction between capability and judgment particularly obvious because it can produce plausible answers very quickly. The first result can look good enough to keep. The tenth result can look better. The twentieth can look spectacular. But generating twenty possibilities doesn’t automatically mean you’ve found the right one. It can simply mean you’ve generated twenty possibilities.
The designer still has to decide what belongs in the work, what doesn’t, what supports the message and what distracts from it. In some cases, AI makes that judgment more important because there are now so many more possible directions available. The same principle applies to almost every modern creative workflow: the easier it becomes to generate possibilities, the more important it becomes to know how to select among them.
Professional Tools Don’t Make Professional Decisions
This is why I don’t think the growing accessibility of creative software makes professional design irrelevant. If anything, it changes what professional design is worth. When basic production becomes easier, the value shifts toward the parts of the process that aren’t solved by clicking a button.
Understanding a brand matters. Understanding an audience matters. Knowing how people actually read a page matters. Knowing why one photograph feels appropriate and another doesn’t matters. Understanding typography beyond picking a font matters. Knowing when a logo needs to be simple matters. Understanding how a design behaves on a phone, a desktop screen, a printed page, a billboard or a tiny social thumbnail matters.
Those are judgment problems. And they’re the reason two people can sit in front of exactly the same software and produce completely different results. One person sees a blank canvas and starts adding things. Another sees a blank canvas and starts asking questions.
The Best Designers Usually Know What Not to Use
One of the easiest ways to spot experience is to look at what a designer leaves out. A less experienced designer often demonstrates capability by adding it: more effects, more type treatments, more colors, more animation, more imagery, more visual detail. An experienced designer can be much more difficult to evaluate from the software alone because the most important decisions may involve things that aren’t there.
A headline might have been given more space instead of another graphic. A photograph might have been left untouched because editing it would weaken the story. A navigation system might contain fewer choices because the designer recognized that the extra options weren’t helping anyone. A logo might be almost boring when viewed at enormous size but work perfectly when reduced to a tiny mark. A website might have fewer animations because movement was competing with the information.
None of those decisions requires a special feature inside the software. The software can execute them, but it doesn’t demand them. That is the difference between knowing how to use a creative application and knowing how to use it well.
Templates Aren’t the Enemy Either
The same argument applies to templates, which sometimes get unfairly blamed for mediocre design. Templates can be incredibly useful. They can establish a starting structure, speed up repetitive production and help someone without extensive design experience create something functional. There’s nothing inherently wrong with using a template. The problem is allowing the template to make every important decision for you.
A good designer can start with a template and completely reshape it around the actual requirements of the project. They understand which pieces are structural, which are decorative and which simply don’t belong. Someone with less experience may accept the visual hierarchy exactly as it was provided because it looks finished. The difference isn’t whether a template was used. It’s whether anyone actually designed the result.
That distinction has become particularly important as creative software increasingly incorporates AI, automated layouts and generated variations. Automation can remove repetitive work and open up possibilities that would have taken much longer to explore manually. That’s valuable. But automation doesn’t eliminate the need for someone to judge the output. If anything, the more possibilities a system can generate, the more important selection becomes.

This is probably where the conversation about creative software is headed whether we like it or not. AI can generate images, extend backgrounds, remove objects, produce variations, suggest layouts, manipulate video, generate copy and perform an increasing number of tasks that once required specialized production skills. That’s a remarkable shift, and pretending otherwise doesn’t help anyone.
But AI makes the difference between generation and direction especially obvious. Producing an image is not the same as knowing which image the project needs. Producing ten logos is not the same as knowing which identity will survive five years of use. Producing a website layout is not the same as understanding how a customer should move through the site. Generating twenty advertising concepts is not the same as knowing which idea represents the brand honestly.

When producing another variation costs almost nothing, the valuable question becomes which variations deserve consideration and which should be discarded immediately. When a machine can generate polished imagery in seconds, the ability to recognize an image that actually belongs to the story becomes more important. When software can assemble an interface automatically, understanding why the interface should work a particular way becomes harder to replace.
Creative Software Is Becoming Infrastructure
I suspect that’s the direction we’re heading: creative software increasingly becomes infrastructure rather than the thing that defines the creative professional. The tools will continue getting faster and easier. Tasks that once required specialized production knowledge will become automated. Interfaces will become more intelligent. AI will take over more of the repetitive work. The software will probably become better at suggesting possibilities before the designer has even asked for them.
That doesn’t mean the designer disappears. It means the definition of the designer changes. The valuable person may increasingly be the one who can frame the problem, understand the audience, establish the direction, recognize a strong idea and reject a hundred merely acceptable ones. The person who understands how all of the tools work still has an advantage, but the advantage comes from being able to direct those capabilities rather than simply demonstrate them.
That is already happening outside of design. Photography didn’t disappear when digital cameras arrived. Video editing didn’t disappear when nonlinear editing replaced physical film workflows. Web development didn’t disappear because page builders became easier. The tools changed the production process. The underlying need for people who understand what they are trying to accomplish remained.
The Tool Should Help You Get There Faster
That’s ultimately where I think creative software is at its best. It should remove unnecessary technical friction so that more attention can be spent on the actual creative problem. If Photoshop can remove an object in seconds instead of requiring hours of manual work, that’s progress. If Figma can let a team test dozens of interface variations without rebuilding everything, that’s progress. If an AI-assisted tool can handle a repetitive production task that used to consume half a day, that’s progress.
The danger isn’t that the tools are becoming too powerful. The danger is assuming that because the tools are powerful, the thinking no longer matters. In fact, the opposite may be true. The easier production becomes, the more obvious the quality of the decisions becomes. When almost anyone can produce something polished, polish stops being enough to distinguish the work.
What starts to matter is whether there was a reason for the work to exist in the first place.

The Software Matters Less Than the Person Using It
By this point, the argument can sound a little unfair to the software. It isn’t. Professional creative applications are extraordinarily important, and the people who know them well can do things that would be difficult, expensive or practically impossible without them. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Figma, Premiere, After Effects and the growing collection of AI-assisted creative tools have changed the economics and speed of creative production. The point isn’t that the tools don’t matter. It’s that their value depends heavily on the person making the decisions.
Give two people the same software, the same photograph, the same brand and the same assignment and you can end up with two completely different pieces of work. That’s not because one person has discovered a secret Photoshop filter. It’s because the software is only one part of the process. One person may immediately start manipulating the photograph. The other may spend an hour figuring out why the photograph is being used, what it needs to communicate and whether it’s even the right photograph. One may begin assembling a website from components. The other may first work out what the visitor needs to know and what the business needs the site to accomplish.
Knowing the Software Is Still a Skill
There is sometimes a tendency to dismiss technical knowledge when talking about creativity, as though having good ideas is all that matters. That’s just as wrong as believing software expertise is enough. Technical skill matters enormously. Someone who understands Photoshop deeply can work with much greater precision and speed than someone who only knows the basics. An experienced Illustrator user understands how artwork needs to be constructed for different applications. A strong Figma user can build systems that make a large product dramatically easier to maintain. A professional editor understands how footage, sound, pacing, color and delivery requirements interact.
The difference is that technical skill becomes most valuable when it serves judgment. Knowing how to use the tool means you can execute the idea. Knowing the tool extremely well means you can sometimes discover better ways to execute it. But neither replaces the need to decide what the idea should be. That’s why I wouldn’t tell somebody not to learn Photoshop because design is “about ideas.” Learn Photoshop. Learn Illustrator. Learn Figma. Learn whatever tools are appropriate to the work you want to do. Understanding the mechanics gives you freedom. You can’t make intelligent decisions about possibilities you don’t understand. The mistake is stopping at the mechanics and assuming you’ve learned the discipline simply because you’ve learned the application.
Experience Shows Up in the Decisions Nobody Notices
One of the interesting things about experienced designers is that much of their expertise is invisible in the finished piece. You see the logo, but you don’t see the dozens of versions that were rejected. You see the website, but you don’t see the decisions about hierarchy, navigation, content and responsive behavior that happened before the final interface was assembled. You see the photograph, but you don’t see the judgment involved in deciding what should remain untouched.
That invisible decision-making is where a tremendous amount of professional value lives. A designer who has spent years working with brands understands that a logo isn’t simply an attractive graphic. It has to survive different sizes, backgrounds, applications and reproduction methods. A web designer understands that a beautiful desktop layout is only the beginning because the same information has to make sense on a phone. A photographer understands that a technically perfect image can still be the wrong image. A video editor understands that a scene can be beautifully shot and still need to disappear from the final cut.
None of those decisions is particularly impressive when demonstrated in a software tutorial. There isn’t a button labeled “understand the client.” There isn’t a Photoshop panel for “recognize when this effect is unnecessary.” There isn’t a Figma component called “make the user understand where to go.” Those abilities come from experience, observation and understanding the purpose behind the work.
The Real Skill Is Knowing What to Leave Alone
I think restraint is one of the clearest signs that someone understands design. When people are learning a new application, they naturally want to explore it. That’s part of the fun. They try filters, effects, transitions, type treatments, masks, gradients, animation and every other capability they can find. There’s nothing wrong with that during exploration. Eventually, though, professional work requires a different question: does this actually make the piece better?
Sometimes the answer is yes. Often the answer is no. A designer who can remove three elements and make the remaining element more effective has probably made a better decision than someone who added ten impressive effects. A website that removes unnecessary navigation options can be easier to use. A logo that becomes simpler can become more recognizable. A photograph that receives less retouching can feel more authentic. A presentation with fewer slides can make a stronger argument. A video that cuts ten seconds from an opening sequence can get to the point before the viewer loses interest.
Creative software gives you the ability to add almost endlessly. Professional judgment includes knowing when adding something has stopped helping. That principle applies just as much to a website as it does to a logo, photograph or advertisement. Design has to work as a system, not simply look impressive when one element is viewed in isolation. The Best Tool Is the One That Gets Out of the Way
Ultimately, I don’t think the goal of creative software should be to make the software visible. The best tools disappear into the process. Photoshop should let you manipulate the image without making the image feel like a demonstration of Photoshop. Figma should let you build and test an interface without making the interface feel like a demonstration of Figma. Illustrator should let you construct a mark without the finished logo announcing which application produced it.
The same is true of AI. If an AI-assisted tool helps a designer arrive at a better result faster, that’s a win. If it produces something impressive that doesn’t solve the actual problem, it’s just another way to make a bad decision quickly.
That is why I don’t think the future of creative work is really a contest between people and software. The more interesting question is what happens when people with strong creative judgment gain access to increasingly capable tools. The possibilities are enormous. But the person still has to decide which possibility is worth pursuing.
Capability Is Not the Same Thing as Judgment
That’s the distinction I keep coming back to. Creative software gives us capability. Experience gives us context. Design gives us a reason to make decisions in the first place. You need all three, but they aren’t interchangeable.
Someone can know every shortcut in Photoshop and still produce terrible visual communication. Someone can build an immaculate Figma component system and still create an interface that nobody enjoys using. Someone can produce a technically beautiful brand identity that says absolutely nothing about the company behind it. Someone can generate hundreds of images with AI and never find the one image that actually belongs in the campaign.
And someone with a relatively simple tool, a strong idea and good judgment can sometimes produce something far more effective.

Use templates when they make sense. Let AI handle the tedious parts when it can. Explore what the technology makes possible. But don’t confuse the ability to produce something with the ability to know what should be produced.
Because when everyone has access to increasingly powerful creative tools, the tool itself becomes less of the differentiator. The decisions become the design.
