Getting Your Logo Print-Ready: Why Precise Vector Artwork Matters
A logo rarely stays on a screen. Sooner or later it lands on business cards, letterheads, packaging, signage, and stationery, and print is a far less forgiving medium than a monitor. On screen, a slightly soft edge or an imperfectly built shape can pass unnoticed. In print, and especially in high-end print, those small flaws are magnified. Getting your logo genuinely print-ready is what separates a crisp, professional result from one that looks subtly off, and it comes down to a few fundamentals worth understanding before you ever send a file to a printer.
Vector, not raster: the foundation
The single most important requirement for print is that your logo exists as vector artwork. Vector files, built from mathematical paths rather than pixels, can be scaled to any size, from a tiny favicon to a shopfront sign, without losing a shred of sharpness. Raster files such as JPGs and PNGs are made of fixed pixels, so the moment you enlarge them beyond their native size, the edges soften and blur.
For print, this matters enormously. Presses and finishing machines reproduce clean vector paths beautifully, whereas a raster logo enlarged for a banner or reduced for an embossed detail will disappoint. If your logo only exists as a JPG or PNG, having it properly redrawn as a vector before any serious print work is one of the best investments you can make in your brand.
Clean outlines and paths
Being a vector file is not enough on its own; the paths themselves need to be clean. That means shapes built from as few, well-placed anchor points as possible, with no stray points, no accidental gaps in what should be closed shapes, and no overlapping fragments left behind from the design process. Messy paths can print with rough edges or unexpected artefacts, particularly at small sizes.
One step is essential: convert any text in your logo to outlines. Type that is left as live font data will reflow or substitute to a different typeface if the printer does not have your exact font installed, quietly changing the look of your logo. Converting text to outlined shapes locks the letterforms in place so they print exactly as designed.
Colour: from screen to print
Colour is where many logos go wrong in print. Screens display colour in RGB, mixing light, while printing reproduces colour in CMYK, mixing ink, and the two do not map perfectly onto each other. A vivid blue on your monitor can print noticeably duller if it is simply converted without thought.
For brand consistency, the safest approach is to define your logo’s colours as spot colours using a system like Pantone®, which specifies each colour as an exact, pre-mixed recipe so it prints the same every time. Just as important is how your artwork is separated: each colour needs to sit on its own cleanly, including blind embossing, so the printer can reproduce or plate it accurately. Well-organised colour separations are the difference between a logo that reproduces faithfully and one that comes out muddy or misaligned.
When precision matters most: premium print finishing
Everyday digital printing is fairly tolerant, but the moment you move into premium and specialist techniques, the demands on your artwork rise sharply. When working with premium printers such as Baddeley Brothers, whose engraved, foiled and letterpress stationery demands exceptionally precise vector artwork, even the smallest inconsistency in your logo’s outlines or colour separations can affect the final result.
The reason is physical. Techniques like engraving, die-stamping, letterpress, and foil blocking work by cutting a die or plate directly from your artwork’s paths, then pressing it into the paper. There is no screen to hide behind and no easy way to fudge a rough edge. A slightly open path, an untidy curve, or an imprecise colour separation that would never show in casual digital printing becomes clearly visible when it is stamped, pressed, or engraved into a luxury stock. For this kind of work, immaculate vector artwork is not a nice-to-have; it is the whole foundation of the result.
File formats printers actually want
To preserve all of the above, supply your logo in a proper vector format. Adobe Illustrator (.AI) files are the gold standard, giving full control over paths, layers, and colour. EPS is a stable, widely compatible vector format, and a PDF saved directly from vector software retains editability and precision. Raster formats should be avoided for logo artwork wherever possible, since they discard the very qualities print relies on.
Supplying the right format upfront also saves time and money. When a printer receives a raster logo, someone has to trace and rebuild it before the job can proceed, which adds cost, introduces the risk of subtle differences from your original, and slows everything down.
A quick print-ready checklist
Before sending your logo to any printer, run through the essentials. Confirm the file is a true vector, not a raster image dressed up in a vector wrapper. Check that all text has been converted to outlines, and that paths are clean, closed, and free of stray points. Make sure colours are defined deliberately, ideally as spot colours for brand-critical shades, with tidy separations. Any blind embossed font type can use the pink channel/colour. Supply the artwork as an AI, EPS, or vector PDF. Finally, for anything important, ask for proof so you can catch problems before they are committed to the press.
Set your logo up to shine
Your logo is the face of your brand, and it deserves to appear as sharp and consistent in print as it does on screen. The groundwork is not complicated, but it is exacting: build it as clean vector artwork, outline the type, define the colours with care, and supply the right file format. Do that, and your logo will reproduce faithfully across everything from a quick digital flyer to the most refined engraved stationery. Skip it, and even a beautiful design can let you down at the moment it matters most. A little precision at the artwork stage pays off every single time your logo goes to print.
